In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) in Laguna Hills, Orange County CA

In Vitro Fertilization has become a common term for couples undergoing fertility treatment. It is undoubtedly the most effective form of assisted reproductive technology in the world. Indeed, IVF has helped several couples around the world to have healthy babies.

What Is Involved

IVF is actually a complex series of procedures that can help couples with different fertility problems have healthy babies. It can also be used when there is a need to prevent a genetic problem that is likely to occur if natural conception takes place.

Depending on the unique fertility or genetic challenge the couple has, eggs and sperm from the couple may be used. It can also involve eggs, sperm, or embryos from known or anonymous donors. In some instances, a gestational carrier (a woman who carries the implanted embryo in her uterus) might be used.

What to Expect

To achieve the desired result, one or more cycles of IVF may be required. A typical one cycle will include the following:

  • Ovulation Inducement

If your own eggs are to be used for the IVF, you will begin a treatment to stimulate your ovaries to produce multiple eggs. This is normally achieved with synthetic hormones. You will likely take several medications and undergo procedures like vaginal ultrasound and blood tests.

  • Egg Retrieval

Upon maturation, the eggs will be harvested before ovulation. The harvested eggs will be placed in a nutritive liquid and incubated.

  • Sperm Retrieval

A partner’s sperm may be used for IVF, or a donor’s sperm will be used. In any case, the sperm will be separated semen fluid in the lab before use.

  • Fertilization

Fertilization can be achieved through conventional insemination or intracytoplasmic sperm injection.

  • Embryo Transfer

After fertilization, an embryo will be transferred into the uterus. If successful, the embryo will implant in the lining of your uterus between six and ten days after egg retrieval.
